Cluss worked at the Navy Yard in the 1850s and early 1860s. His first buildings included a major facility at the Navy Yard and the Wallach School.  \;Browne will report on four buildings on Capitol Hill designed by Cluss but not known as his work until four years ago\, including the Naval Lodge’s original building. \; Browne will also discuss how the Civil War influenced Cluss’s decision to launch an architectural firm and how war time projects for the Army\, Navy and the City of Washington boosted his career and led to his design of nearly 90 Washington buildings over the next 25 years. This portion of the meeting with be open for guests.Browne directed the Adolf Cluss Exhibition Project from 2001-2006.
